Charles is an unnecessarily complicated alien being.
Blue-Blob Alien. Charles' species adapts it's form to whatever life-form dominates the planet. [His] species is purely scientific and non-aggressive other than research. They have been known to dissect and experiment on other species for science and without the intent of causing war. Which happens sometimes by mistake... Oops? Anyway!
Charles' species is created by the sands of their planet being struck with high-high-high-super-high voltage lightning of the atmosphere, creating a melted glass and "shocking" life into the chemicals. These chemicals combine and form blobs which are able to transform and function until they gain enough 'life' to form thoughts. Evolution occurs and "A, B, C...X, Y, Z" they become thoughtful and intelligence life-forms, forever seeking knowledge.
They utilize their resources and weather to create types of energy which they use for space-travel to distant planets. At these planets they observe* all forms of organic life and then bring the information back to their home-planet for storage.
*observe: Take everything apart at least once to see how it works and then, if possible, put it back together to see if it still works.
